How to Get Second-Day Hair

Many curlies have witnessed their beautiful morning curls turn to frizz by nightfall. The frizz and lack of definition can be a sign of dry hair. Moisture balance and styling techniques to revive curls can help anyone achieve second-day hair.

Moisturizing Curly Hair

The products used in the creation of a hairstyle can make the difference in how long a hairdo lasts. Curly hair requires mild cleansing and extra moisturizing conditioners and styling products. If any of these products dry out the hair, the curls can loose definition and frizz.
Keep hair moisturized by starting out with the right hair cleanser and conditioner. Curly hair is often naturally dry. Use sulfate-free shampoos only once a week to prevent drying out hair. Always deep condition after using shampoo. Read product ingredient labels. Look for conditioners with moisturizing ingredients such as olive oil, aloe vera gel, wheat protein and coconut oil.
Rinse hair with water between shampoos and apply conditioner. If hair needs washing more than once a week, cleanse it with conditioner in place of shampoo. Curly expert Lorraine Massey of Devachan Salon, author of Curly Girl, recommends conditioner-only washing exclusively for curly hair care. Many conditioners contain enough cleansing ingredients, such as cocobetaine, to remove dirt and product build-up.
Do not use any products with silicone ingredients such as dimethicone, amodimethicone or cyclopentasiloxane, because they require frequent harsh sulfate-based shampoos to remove product build-up and prevent dryness. Silicones are in many hair products because they can mask damage by making the hair shiny and easier to comb. Instead, look for products with natural oils because they give similar results but are easier to wash out with mild shampoo or conditioner alone.
Use a leave-in conditioner or apply a natural oil like jojoba oil before applying styling products. Applying the leave-in conditioner or oil to damp hair will help seal in moisture. The consistency of the conditioner and its moisturizing benefits can smooth the hair cuticle and help styling products go on smoothly. Leave-in conditioner can also help hair gel dry with less "crunch."

Styling Curly Hair

Curly hairstyles tend to last longer if the curls are set. Apply a holding product such as gel or styling cream. Use hair clips or bobby pins to place strands of curls in place for a hairdo. Do not remove the clips until the hair is dry.
Twist curls by hand to set in tight spirals. The spirals should hold shape for hours and sometimes days.
When there isn't time to leave wet hair hanging down, twist hair into an updo and secure it with clips. Let hair dry in the updo, which will set in deep curls or waves.
Do not touch wet hair after styling hair because it could cause frizz.

Second-Day Hair

Protecting hair at night helps retain curly hairstyles. A rough night of tossing and turning on a cotton pillow case can lead to frizzy bed head. Use a satin pillow case or invest in a satin bonnet or silk scarf to prevent frizz and maintain curls.

Reviving Curls

Whenever curls start to lose definition, revive them. Apply leave-in conditioner to the hair and twist curls into shape with your fingers. Let dry.
An alternative curl revival method involves adding water. Spray a mixture of distilled water mixed with either conditioner or jojoba oil into hair. This can help ringlets form. Some people can simply smooth wet hands through their hair and add conditioner or a little gel to revive curls.
Second-day hair is possible with the right moisture balance and curl reviving techniques.
